Red Pine Plantation, Hunt Club Rd.

In early June, community members reached out to the GA for help in opposing a development that would cut down 1.57 ha of a red pine plantation to make way for a parking and car storage lot for a BMW dealership. Members agreed to support the request and made many useful suggestions for how to respond, which were included in our submission to the City. (Post-meeting note: This item was slated for the August 26 meeting of Planning Committee but has been deferred.)

The organized community outcry regarding these two threats to greenspace seem to have had and effect. The proponent has paused its application in the first case, while in the second it seems a land swap is being discussed between the developer and the City, which would preserve the third of the woodland that was threatened. (Post-meeting note: Both items were to be considered at the August 26 meeting of Planning Committee but have now been deferred sine die.)

The Hunt Club forest has been clear cut by the Airport Authority, despite the efforts of the local community and environmental allies to preserve it. The GA sent a letter to the CEO of the Airport Authority and of the NCC decrying this loss of greenspace and calling on the NCC to proactively plan for the transition of similar unmaintained plantations throughout the Greenbelt to mixed woodlands as they reach end of life stage.
