Protection for Heritage trees

New updated content: 2024-12-19 12:45:54 An inquiry has been sent to City staff regarding the development of a heritage tree policy which would address the protection of healthy, mid-life ancient trees, beyond the protection currently afforded to distinctive trees in the Tree Protection Bylaw. This is an outstanding issue from the development of the Urban Forest Management Plan and Tree Protection bylaw which needs to be addressed to prevent the

Newly designated Provincially Significant Wetland

New updated content: 2024-12-19 12:45:53 The City announced that as a result of wetland evaluations it had commissioned, a large wetland complex on the eastern edge of Ottawa’s urban boundary was designated as Provincially Significant. The Bear Brook wetlands cover 561 hectares east and south of the Tewin urban expansion area. This is cause for a huge celebration as it is a very rare occurrence indeed that such a large

This is a very old proposal (it was one of the triggers for the founding of the Greenspace Alliance in 1997) that will just not die. We agreed to support

Quebec Senator Rosa Galvez, supported by Pontiac Liberal MP Sophie Chatel, introduced a Bill S-289 to further protect Gatineau Park and strengthen collaboration with the Algonquin Anishinabeg Nation. While this is good news, members were skeptical as to whether this would lead to any real change as many similar

New threat to the Central Experimental Farm

The City of Ottawa’s Planning and Housing Committee approved an application to build two high-rise towers adjacent to the Central Experimental Farm, despite the clear message from Agriculture Canada that it will cause irreparable harm to the CEF. But it is not over yet. The issue will go to full Council for final approval on Wednesday September 27. We are organizing a letter writing campaign ahead of the meeting. See
