WARD 18 Candidates – Alta Vista

The propositions:

1. Support for a strong site alteration by-law, with emphasis on “strong.”
2. Renewed commitment to an annual allocation towards an environmental lands acquisition fund.
3. Standing firm in support of the prohibition against future country lot subdivisions.
4. The City’s Advisory Committees should be genuine bridges between the public and Council.

Brandon Scharfe: “The propositions don’t seem to be onerous to fulfill. Certainly there is currently a framework behind the propositions it just has to be tweaked and altered with help from the alliances input, as mentioned, in order to move forward with the official plan and built stronger environmental security and sustainability.”

Jeff Dubois: “If elected, I would endorse ALL of the propositions you have put forth although, admittedly, I have some concerns over proposition 3. Amalgamation has given rural residents somewhat less say over what happens in their local wards and there is currently no “weighting” over city-wide voting with respect to ward issues.

It is not my intention to flip-flop on the issue but I think you can understand the dilemma on this issue. Should the residents of Osgoode, for instance, not be afforded “more” of a say over what happens in Osgoode than being dictated by the residents of Kanata, Centretown, Barrhaven or Vanier?

As stated, I have reservations about Proposition 3 because it fails to consider the wishes of the ciy’s constituent parts.”
